Dr. Gary McClain of JustGotDiagnosed.com offers new article on family dances and chronic illness.

Posted By on May 15, 2012

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 01, 2012

Dr. Gary McClain has published a new article as part of his Chronic Communication series. The article, Take a look at those family dances, will be published on his Website, JustGotDiagnosed.com and on AllianceHealth.com. A specialist in the emotional impact of chronic and catastrophic illnesses, Gary McClain, PhD, developed JustGotDiagnosed.com to address a serious need he saw going unfulfilled; namely, a way for newly-diagnosed patients to receive help in coping with their emotional reactions to their diagnosis.

Family communication can look a lot like dancing, McClain said. The music plays in the background while everyone steps to the rhythm, using the moves that they have learned over the years. When one family member is diagnosed with a chronic illness, this can shake up those dance routines. A chronic condition has a way of giving us a push to look at life in a different way, whether we are the one are experiencing the illness or a family member.

McClain provided examples of how the family dances are affected by chronic illness. Family members have to get involved with each other in ways they never expected to. Maybe the rock needs the emotional support, and cant jump in to help everybody else with their emotions. The givers have to do some taking. The takers have to give. The listened to have to do some listening.

In his article, McClain provides guidelines for creating positive change in family communications:

1. Recognize your family dances. Take a look at how you communicate with other family members. Identify the family dances, the ones that make for a positive relationship and the ones that seem only to cause pain, over and over and over.

2. When the music starts, pause before you jump in. Ask yourself, is this a pattern that helps us to communicate better that promotes teamwork and harmony or one that gets in the way of communication. That might also mean, dont take the bait. Responding to a criticism with I understand how you feel or Lets let go of that can take the conversation in a new direction.

3. Suggest some new steps. Maybe its time for someone to lead the way away from those familiar but destructive dances. Decide to lead and not follow. Focus in on the issue. Identify what the other person seems to be doing    Ask: Can we look at this another way and not automatically assume? or How about if we stop and try to be show more concern for each other? Or maybe, How can I help?

4. Keep the tempo upbeat. Family dances are often anything but happy. You can change the tempo by staying optimistic and positive. Stay open to whats possible instead of what seems impossible. Assume the best of intentions in other family members.

5. Remember that it may take time to learn new steps. A chronic condition is uncharted territory for everybody in the house. A learning curve all the way around. Be patient with yourself, and it will be a lot easier to be patient with everybody else. Compassion is a boomerang send it out and it comes back to you.

Chronic conditions demand that we take a look at how we are living and create changes that promote well-being, McClain emphasized. Family communication is a critical element in your self-care. Take care of yourself, take care of your relationships.

GMAC MET Fund Grant Awards Cloud-based Management Education Collaborative Network Project to Pepperdines Graziadio School of Business and Management

Posted By on May 2, 2012

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) April 17, 2012

The Graduate Management Admission CouncilŪ (GMACŪ), owner of the GMATŪ exam and the leading membership organization of graduate business and management schools worldwide, today awarded the Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University a $ 60,000 grant to develop requirements and specifications for a cloud-based knowledge-exchange portal that allows business schools to conduct peer-to-peer collaboration to address student learning innovations and related issues.

The goal of the Management Education Collaboration Network (MECNET), Pepperdines GMAC MET Fund project, is to provide the management education community with a dynamic Internet-based vehicle to drive innovation regarding student learning through the sharing and exchanging of ideas, said project lead Dr. Owen Hall, Jr., a Professor of Decision Sciences at Pepperdines Graziadio School. This effort builds on work that has been conducted at the Graziadio School over the past several years. Two specific Graziadio initiatives include the measurement of faculty attitudes towards the hybrid learning model and the design of a prototype faculty collaboration network.

The GMAC Management Education for Tomorrow (MET) Fund has awarded more than US$ 7.1 million in grants to 12 organizations across six countries in the second round of its Ideas to Innovation (i2i) Challenge. The i2i Challenge was created and managed by the GMACs MET Fund, a US$ 10 million initiative to advance business education around the world.

Schools and organizations developed their grant proposals in response to an earlier phase of the i2i Challenge, in which individuals were invited to answer the question, What one idea would improve graduate management education? In total, 17 of the 20 winning i2i concepts, which were announced in January 2011, will be implemented by the organizations that were awarded today.

Twenty-five proposals from seven countries were submitted in the second round of the challenge, which ran from January to December 2011. The grantees include business schools and organizations in the U.S., Canada, Spain, Italy, India and Botswana.

Pepperdines MECNET project is expected to start early May and end in late December with delivery of a RFP.

By any standard management education has come a long way since Sir Isaac Pitman initiated the first correspondence course in the early 1840s. Today, the hybrid learning model, which combines the best practices of the traditional classroom with the power of the Internet, is becoming the name of the game in management education, said Dr. Hall.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) April 13, 2012

Jeanne Ettelson, president of OCD Chicago, announced that OCD Chicago is co-sponsoring National Stress Out Day, along with Active Minds and Anxiety Disorders Association of America.

Next week college students on over 160 campuses across the country are participating in the 7th annual National Stress Out Daya nationwide effort to provide pre-finals stress relief and to educate students about the difference between everyday anxiety and anxiety disorders or other mental illness. Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental health problems on college campuses. Forty million U.S. adults suffer from an anxiety disorder, and 75% of them experience their first episode of anxiety before age 22 according to Active Minds. A recent national survey by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA found first-year college students’ self-ratings of their emotional health dropped to record lows in 2010. And a 2009 survey by the American College Health Association found that 46% of college students said they felt things were hopeless at least once in the previous 12 months, and nearly a third of college students had been so depressed that it was difficult to function.

During National Stress Out Day, Active Minds chapters will invite students to participate in stress relieving activities like water balloon fights, petting zoos, and yoga. They will also be educated about mental health issues and made aware of the mental health resources available to them. National Stress Out Day aims to shed light on anxiety disorders while promoting a healthy dialogue around all mental health issues.
